About the Equine Flu Test
GetTested's Equine Flu Test detects the Equine Influenza Virus (EIV) – a highly contagious respiratory infection spread through droplets when horses cough or sneeze. The test identifies viral antigens in nasal or ocular secretions, helping you quickly identify an infection and limit further spread. Early detection is crucial to protect your horse and other stable mates.
Why Test for Equine Flu?
Equine flu can spread very quickly among horses in close contact – for example, in stables, at competitions, or during transport. Even mild infections can lead to significant fatigue and reduced performance, while severe cases can cause fever, coughing, and breathing difficulties. By testing, you can detect the virus early and contact your veterinarian for further clarification and treatment.
Symptoms to Look Out For
Common signs of equine influenza include:
- Fever and nasal discharge
- Dry or persistent cough
- Fatigue or reluctance to exercise
- Loss of appetite or decreased performance
Testing is recommended at the first sign of respiratory illness or if there has been contact with infected horses.
How the Test Works
A nasal or ocular swab is taken from the horse and mixed with the included buffer solution. A few drops are then placed on the test cassette. Within 5–10 minutes, the result window indicates whether the influenza antigen is present. No laboratory equipment is needed.
