Measured Parameters in the Herpes Test
Rapid Test for the Herpes Virus
The herpes test is a rapid diagnostic test that detects antibodies to herpes simplex virus type 1 and type 2 (HSV-1 & HSV-2) in the blood. The test is easy to perform and provides results within 10–15 minutes.
What does the test detect?
The test detects IgG and IgM antibodies against HSV-1 and HSV-2, which may indicate a past or current infection:
- IgM antibodies may indicate a recent or active infection.
- IgG antibodies may indicate a past or already established infection.
Since antibodies remain in the body for a long time, the test cannot determine whether the infection is currently active.
What is the Herpes Simplex Virus?
- HSV-1 (Herpes Simplex Type 1): Mostly associated with cold sores, but can also cause genital herpes. Transmission primarily occurs through saliva and skin contact.
- HSV-2 (Herpes Simplex Type 2): Primarily associated with genital herpes, but can also occur in the oral area. Transmission occurs through sexual contact.
Symptoms of Herpes
A herpes infection can be asymptomatic or cause the following symptoms:
- Small blisters or sores on the lips, mouth, or genitals
- Tingling, itching, or burning before an outbreak
- Fever and swollen lymph nodes during the initial infection
- Recurrent outbreaks triggered by stress, illness, or a weakened immune system
The test is CE-certified for professional use.
